2019 Natural Home Remedies for Kids Cold

According to studies, children get colds for an average of six to ten times every year. During flu season, it gets even worse. Since flu and colds are usually caused by viruses, it can be cured through medication. However, for kids under 4 years of age, it isn’t entirely recommended.

Instead of giving them medicine, it is still better to treat them naturally. Below are some of the natural home remedies that you can try when your kids have a cold:

Chicken Noodle Soup

Has your mom ever told you that chicken noodle soup is the best when you’re not well? Well, it seems like she was right. According to one nonprofit academic medical center – Mayo Clinic – chicken soup can relieve some cold symptoms, such as fatigue and aches. Not only does it act as an anti-inflammatory, but it also speeds up the movement of the mucus, which helps to relieve congestion.

As an alternative, you can also try warmed apple juice or water infused with lemon. These drinks can help relieve congestion. It can also be quite soothing for your kids. If you don’t have these two, you can also try lukewarm chamomile tea.

Honey offers a lot of benefits to one’s health, ranging from lowered blood pressure and triglycerides to improved cholesterol. On top of that, honey can also soothe sore throats and aid in cough relief.

If your kid is aged 2 to 5, you may give half a teaspoon of honey for cough relief. For kids ages 6 to 11, one teaspoon is required. For kids ages 12 and above, two teaspoons are required. In addition, honey is not recommended to be given to babies younger than 1 year.

As an alternative, you can try feeding your kids soft foods, including gelatin and pudding. They are considered to be good remedies for sore and itchy throats. Moreover, it also helps to whet your kids’ appetite.

In case you aren’t aware, cold viruses usually flourish in cold, dry air. This is the reason why they are more common during cold seasons. Since dry air dries out the mucous membrane, it leads to a stuffy nose and an itchy throat.

So, in order to fight off the cold virus, you would need warm and humid air. You can run a hot bath for your kids so that the steam can help loosen the mucus in their nasal passages, which makes it easier for them to breathe. It can also relax and comfort them.

Salt Water

If we’re going to discuss natural home remedies, then we should include salt water to the list. Make your kids gargle a mixture of salt – About a quarter up to a half teaspoon – and a cup of warm water. This mixture can help to temporarily alleviate a sore or itchy throat, as well as loosen up mucus.

So, convince your kids – as best as you can – to gargle for at least 3 times a day. This remedy is usually done for kids ages 4 and above since gargling can be difficult for young kids. You can try teaching your kids by letting them practice with plain water. Instruct them to spit the water out instead of swallowing it.

Plenty of Rest

When kids are sick, they usually don’t have a lot of energy. So, in order to fight off their illness, make sure that they are well-rested at all times. When they get enough sleep every day, they tend to recover faster.

Instead of doing activities that require them to move a lot, make them do quiet activities like coloring and solving puzzles so that they are able to conserve their energy.
