7 Classic Mom Sayings that We Can’t Help but Copy

“Why can’t you be more like your brother/sister?” “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you watch them?“ ““While you’re under my roof, you follow my rules.” “When you have kids someday, I hope they grow up to be just like you.” “Don’t make me repeat myself…” “Because I said so, that’s why!”

You’ve probably heard a couple of these worn-out lines from your mom when you were younger. Even though some of them can be pretty hilarious, we can’t deny that there is some wisdom in them. Moreover, you’ll find that you actually end up using the same lines to your children even though you swore that you won’t say them.

Whether they are sarcastic, hilarious, threatening, or purely clever, here are some of the best classic mom sayings that we truly can’t help but copy:

“Don’t forget to wear a sweater.”

Nothing feels warmer than hearing your mom looking out for you, particularly during cold weather and most especially during winter. This is one classic mom saying that I will surely repeat to my kids for the rest of their lives.

Even as an adult and as a parent myself, I can still hear my mom saying these words to me.

“One day you’ll thank me for this…”

No doubt we’ve all heard these words almost every day. Whether she’s making us eat our vegetable or sleep early or brush our teeth, our mom only wants what’s best for us. I mean, no mom would want to wish something bad for her child, right? So, just trust your mom when she says that she’s doing this for your own good.

“I’m only going to count up to three…”

Now, when you hear these words you know that your mom means serious business. You better do as she says, or you’re going to get it. What “it” even means remains a mystery even up to this point. The only thing that we do get is that we’re going to be in trouble if we don’t follow what mom says after she counts to three, and so that is what makes it an effective way to get children to listen to their mom.

“Don’t make me repeat myself.”

We say these words, but we still end up repeating it over and over and over again. I guess we just think that children would listen to us if we keep using this worn-out line over and over to them. To be completely fair, it does work at times. So, rest easy because there won’t be any judgment here at all.

“When I was your age…”

Yeah, we know that you were a good little kid when you were younger. When you hear this, be sure to prepare yourself to hear some flashback stories from mom’s journey from childhood.

“Finish your meal. Don’t you know that there are kids out there who can’t even afford to have one bite?”

We’ve all heard this line. So, what happens if we do take a bite? Will those starving kids be suddenly full and not starving? What moms mean is that you need to value the food on the table while it’s still there and that there are a lot of children who would like to eat that, but they can’t because they can’t afford to buy food.

“I said no, and that’s final.”

“I’ve already said ‘no’ to what you were asking. Even if you ask me a hundred times, my answer will still be the same. So, you better stay quiet before you make me angrier.” What could be more cliché than that? If you’re thinking that she will change her mind if you continue to ask her, then you’re absolutely wrong. You should realize that she’s already made up her mind, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Are these lines uncomfortably familiar to you? Don’t be surprised if you’ve heard or even spoke some of these charming mom lines before. These are all great mom lines that you can use, just wait and see.
