All of us grow old no matter what. As we get older, our skin loses its elasticity and moisture and begins to sag. Our eyes gradually lose their clear sight. Our hearing, in one way or another, becomes impaired. To simply put it, our bodies age and begin to wither. However, for some people, this starts to happen much earlier than usual. They tend to look much older than they really are and also feel that way.

In some cases, this can be caused by poor lifestyle choices and habits that play a vital role in the aging process. In order to keep our bodies looking young and healthy, here are some of the habits that you have today that make you look older than you should start avoiding:

Not using sunscreen

Back when we were young, we have often been warned by our elders to avoid being exposed to direct sunlight as much as possible. Come to think of it now, it is quite reasonable because not only does it cause wrinkles and sun spots, but it can also potentially lead to cancer of the skin. In fact, 90% of skin aging cases are caused by exposure to direct sunlight.

One of the things that can prevent that from happening is the application of sunscreen. When you wear sunscreen, no matter what the weather is outside, you can keep yourself looking young and healthy. Sadly, however, it seems that less and fewer people are using sunscreen nowadays.

According to dermatologists, you should wear sunscreen at all times, even when it’s rainy, cloudy, or even during winter, since UVA rays can penetrate through clouds and cause premature aging.


Not only is smoking bad for your health, most specifically your lungs, but it can also make you appear older than your actual age. According to one study, smoking causes premature aging on top of all the health hazards that it poses.

People who smoke display some noticeable changes in their skin health. Even in a span of five years, smoking can cause a considerable amount of skin aging. With this much negative impact that smoking brings, you should seriously consider quitting now.

Using your phone 24/7

In the digital age, more and more people are getting addicted to technology, more specifically smartphones. Everywhere I look, I can see people looking down at their phones like their surrounding doesn’t matter anymore.

Now, using your phone alone doesn’t cause premature aging, but looking down at your phone for hours can. Since the skin on the neck is much thinner than the skin on the face, looking down for an extended period of time can easily cause the neck area to show signs of aging.

So, if you’re always attached to your phone, it is best if you hold your phone higher when you’re using it. As much as possible, it is also great if you can keep your phone or device at eye level so that you won’t have to look down.

Having too many alcoholic drinks

Another cause of premature aging is too much alcohol. Alcohol does not only dehydrate your skin, but it can also damage your DNA, which ultimately leads to a less youthful look. Alcohol prevents your body from producing vasopressin, which is a hormone absorbs water. This can cause your kidneys to exert more and can leave your skin, along with your other organs, to be dehydrated.

If you’re one of those people who like to party, it doesn’t mean that you should quit drinking altogether. You can still have a drink or two, but you should try to minimize or tone down your drinking since it can greatly affect you over time.


I’ve already listed some obvious habits that can cause premature aging, but there are also some small habits that can cause premature aging. One of those things is frowning. You’ve probably heard this too many times before, but frowning can indeed make you look older.

In comparison, smiling can make you look younger and also improve your immunity to sickness. Smiling will not only lighten your mood, but it will also make you look younger and feel healthier, too.

Now that you’ve learned about the negative effects of these bad habits, you can now make smart choices and keep yourself looking young and healthy.
